The Surveyor

Tom has been extensively involved in the internal waterways of Britain for nearly 20 years, gaining vast experience in heritage projects and serving as a trainer and mentor to others. He holds a unique understanding of the challenges and emotional investment that come with boat ownership, having obtained his own vessel, Alizanne, in 2017.

Tom’s journey in the boating industry began in 2004 as a volunteer for the Bradford Motor Education Project, where he honed his skills and acquired a thorough understanding of boats and waterways. He later joined DreamAchievers, where he played a crucial role in the return of the heritage trip boat Apollo to Shipley, and was involved in several heritage projects, including the design and installation of mileposts. In 2013, he joined Canal Connections CIC, a company dedicated to boats and heritage in the Leeds area, currently based at the Royal Armouries Lock House. This is where Tom conducts his marine training, working with individuals of all ages to advance their skills and knowledge of waterways and boats.

Tom is a certified Marine Trainer, obtained under the National Community Boats Association to a standard which is recognised by the MCA. Driven by his passion for waterway safety and commitment to professional excellence, he obtained his Diploma in Marine Surveying in 2021, and continues to seek additional qualifications to enhance his expertise in the industry.
